The African Medical Centre of Excellence, Abuja, a quaternary-level multi-specialty medical institution developed by the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) and King’s College Hospital, London, is set to host its inaugural African Health Forum 2024.
The event will gather healthcare stakeholders from across Africa and international experts to address the pressing challenges posed by the increasing burden of non-communicable diseases on the continent.
Speakers including Benedict Oramah, president of Afreximbank and the visionary behind the AMCE initiative, which is being developed in collaboration with King’s College Hospital, London (KCH) are expected.

The conference will also provide the opportunity to showcase trailblazing projects under the AMCE initiative, such as the AMCE Abuja and a medical and nursing school to be developed in Abuja by Afreximbank in collaboration with Kings College London (KCL) to support the production of quality medical personnel in Africa.
Oramah in an official statement provided to BusinessDay describes the AMCE initiative as a collaborative effort that aligns with Afreximbank’s commitment to fostering sustainable development across the continent.
“The partnership with KCH and KCL underscores our dedication to addressing the healthcare challenges faced by many African nations. Through this transformative initiative, we aim to elevate healthcare standards, empower local communities, and contribute to the overall well-being of the African people,” he stated.
The AMCE initiative seeks to develop medical centres of excellence in the five sub-regions of Africa to address the current issues of underfunded, underequipped, and inaccessible healthcare facilities, where care for both complex and basic cases is often met through medical tourism.
The AMCE Abuja is the first of these facilities that Afreximbank is developing across the continent under the initiative.
The AMCE Abuja entails the development and operationalisation of a quaternary-level multi-speciality 500-bed hospital facility to serve the entire African continent.
It will focus on oncology, haematology and cardiology, in addition to general care capabilities.
The AMCE Abuja’s mission is underpinned by its commitment to collaborate with both international and African partners.
The AMCE African Health Forum 2024 will be an opportunity to discover the vision behind the pioneering project, highlighting key milestones achieved and presenting exciting opportunities for stakeholders to actively participate in the transformative healthcare journey.
