The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC), Osogbo business hub, on Monday warned residents of Osun against illegal connections and energy theft.

Kike Owoeye, IBEDC Communication and branding manager,  issued the warning during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Osogbo on Monday.
Owoeye said illegal connections remained one of the biggest challenges facing the electricity distribution company.
“We have tried as much as possible to arrest, sanction, educate and enlighten the people of the area on the dangers of energy theft and illegal electricity connections.
“But they still have this attitude of everybody is an electrician and we are still appealing to them to desist from such acts,’’ she said.
Owoeye, however, added that the company would redouble its efforts at arresting those still engaging in energy theft.

According to her, those who engage in energy theft and illegal connections do so at night, when they cannot be easily arrested.

She, therefore, urged neighbourhood residents to always report such cases to the company.

Owoeye said if such illegal connections were not reported, the genuine customers of the company would be made to bear the consequences of such illegally consumed energy in their areas.

She added that energy theft was affecting the income of the company, in spite the increase in electricity tariff.
On the alleged poor power supply in the state, Owoeye said the problem was due to the sharp decline in the megawatts being supplied to the state from the national grid. (NAN)
