In the furtherance of promoting household and environmental hygiene, foremost hygiene solutions brand, Hypo entered the city of Ibadan with ‘Team Up to Clean Up’ initiative to sensitize the public on household and environmental hygiene.
The initiative at Ibadan followed a similar exercise in Lagos, at the Ebutte Meta area during the flag exercise on World Health Day in April. Driven on social media with the hashtag #teamuptocleanup, the clean-up exercise in Lagos witnessed a successful turn out by residents and participation of stakeholders from the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Environment
In Ibadan, according to a statement, the clean-up exercise was championed by Ibadan-based radio presenter, Chichi Chikito of Fresh 105.9 FM. The Hypo ‘Team Up to Clean Up’ sanitation team berthed at Darlington Street in Mokola Area and combed the adjoining streets, clearing the gutters, sweeping dirt and educating residents on the health implications of household and environmental hygiene. The choice of Mokola area as the target of the exercise followed an extensive recce of various communities in Ibadan.
In a media interview, Jadesola Surakat, Brand Manager, Hypo said in the statement that the campaign which is in its second season is primarily aimed at fulfilling the corporate responsibility Hypo has towards the society through hygiene education and repositioning the brand from the perceived state of just a whitening agent to a total hygiene solution.
“Cleaning is not a choice; to stay healthy, cleanliness must be imbibed as an essential way of life. If we have a cleaner environment, there is a good chance that most of the avoidable diseases tormenting us like malaria, typhoid, dysentery, ebola would be far away. Hypo has become a phenomena household brand and there are no better ways to give back than this initiative of influencing a positive behaviour for hygiene by engaging residents of communities. This is a collaborative effort and requires a teaming up with the relevant stakeholders such as influencers and government agencies and parastatals.” She explained.
Speaking further, Surakat said that the Team Up to Clean Up initiative would be sustained in Oyo State. “It is important to stress that Hypo isn’t just a bleaching agent for white cloths, it is also a disinfectant that can be used to sterilize and eliminate disease causing organisms in our surrounding and that is why we have come to this community to promote hygiene.”
The Hypo ‘Team Up to Clean Up’ exercise was supported by relevant stakeholders such as the Oyo State Waste Management Authority and the Ministry of Environment. According to the Chief Environmental Health Officer at the state ministry of environment and water resources, Emiola Oyerinde, the clean-up exercise in Ibadan was a demonstration of effective partnership and collaboration between government and the private sector to better the society.
Oyerinde hailed the initiative and urged the residents to cooperate with organizers and imbibe the culture of regular hygiene in the home and the immediate environment. “A higher percentage of waste you see around are generated from the home, therefore household waste management and environment waste management goes hand-in-hand.”
Corroborating with Oyerinde, the Manager, Administration & Monitoring, West Africa ENRG, representatives of the Oyo State Ministry Waste Management Authority, Ishola Gbenga, described the campaign as one in line with the mandate of the ministry. “There was a time when Ibadan had the reputation of being a dirty city but that was then. The story has changed because this administration and previous administrators efforts with support from initiatives like the Hypo ‘Team Up to Clean up. We haven’t achieved our goal yet but we are making progress. I want to encourage other well-spirited organizations to emulate this initiative. This way we will achieve our goals faster.”
