In July 2022, Yemi Osinbajo, former vice president of Nigeria, chose Duchess International Hospital in the heart of Ikeja for the treatment of a fracture of his right femur instead of flying abroad for such treatment.
This preference for a local hospital did not only underscore Osinbajo’s commitment to the need for Nigerians whether in the private or public space to consider the utilisation of Nigeria’s healthcare infrastructure for treatment but his decision was to inspire others in order to save over $1 billion that citizens spend in medical tourism annually.
After the surgery, the hospital management issued a statement that the operation was successful. This also highlights the ability of Nigerian doctors to handle even complicated issues.
Since its establishment in October 2021, Duchess Hospital has achieved several milestones including two groundbreaking pediatric heart surgeries
The first, an aortic root replacement on 12-year-old, under the expert care of Onyekwelu Nzewi and Bode Falase, marked her as the youngest individual in Nigeria to successfully undergo such a procedure.
In a separate remarkable procedure, a 5-month-old infant, Baby M, underwent successful surgery to repair a large, ventricular septal defect led by Michael Sanusi and his dedicated team.
Reports say both surgeries were supported by a talented team of cardiac surgeons, anaesthetists, specialised theatre nurses, perfusionists, and intensive care specialists.
These surgeries and treatments underscore the hospital’s commitment to providing advanced and affordable, world-class, life-saving cardiac care, leveraging state-of-the-art technology and a team of specialised medical professionals.
Duchess International Hospital located in Ikeja is a state-of-the-art 100-bed facility. It offers a comprehensive range of primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare services.
According to the hospital, it aims to become one of the most trusted healthcare partners on the African continent providing the best experience for patients by delivering excellence in healthcare with a personalised touch of hospitality.
“Our bespoke clinical service combines excellence in healthcare with a unique experience in hospitality. We offer a highly personalised service to our patients, delivering complex care tailored to individual needs”, the hospital said
In 2024, Duchess International Hospital received the award for the Best ‘Private Tertiary Healthcare Facility’ of the Year at the 2024 Nigerian Healthcare Excellence Awards.
Oje Ovbiageli, customer experience manager at Duchess International Hospital, said in the hospital website that “The best part about working at Duchess is seeing people who walked in with anxiety and concern, leaving satisfied having been treated and being on that journey of healing. Attending to them well is one of my greatest sources of satisfaction”.
Duchess International is a wholly indigenous brand, firmly rooted and invested in the needs of the domestic populace. And as Osinbajo said in 2021 when commissioning the hospital, the hospital should serve as a pointer to more investments in Nigeria’s system to enhance service quality and reduce medical tourism.
