Emeka Emuwa becomes second Nigerian to receive Citibank's distinguished alumni award

Emeka Emuwa, Chairman of the Board of Verod Holdings and a titan of African banking, has been named a recipient of the Citi Distinguished Alumni Award in Leadership, an elite recognition reserved for a select few across the Middle East and Africa who have demonstrated extraordinary leadership and institutional impact.

In its over 40 years in Nigeria, Citibank has only conferred the award once before, to Yemi Cardoso, former Chairman of Citibank Nigeria and now CBN Governor.

Marking a rare milestone in Citibank Nigeria’s history, Emuwa becomes only the second Nigerian to receive this distinction. The previous recipient, Yemi Cardoso, is the current Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Emuwa’s legacy at Citibank is foundational. In 2005, he became the first Nigerian appointed as Chief Executive Officer and Country Officer for Citibank Nigeria.

His 25-year tenure at the institution saw him helm operations across eight African nations, including Ghana, Cameroon, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, cementing his reputation as a pan-African strategist.

Since leaving Citibank, Emuwa has remained a pivotal architect of the continent’s financial landscape.

As Group Managing Director and CEO of Union Bank of Nigeria, he successfully spearheaded a comprehensive transformation following a landmark $500 million international recapitalisation. His leadership has extended to the continental stage as immediate past Chairman of the Africa Finance Corporation (AFC), and to the global stage as Chairman of Tangerine Financial (UK).

A certified mediator, Emuwa currently chairs the Board of Verod Holdings, a premier Africa-focused private equity and venture capital group. A Fellow of the Institute of Directors (UK) and the Institute of Bankers (Nigeria), he holds an MSc in Management from Purdue University and Corporate Governance from INSEAD.

As Sub-Saharan Africa enters a projected high-growth cycle, Emuwa’s recognition highlights the caliber of leadership driving the continent’s deepening financial maturity and global investor confidence.
