Dominican Order seeks N250m seed capital to finance quality learning in Nigeria

Determined to provide quality education in Nigeria, Dominican Order plans to raise N250 million for the completion of its college project in Abuja.

According to the organisation, N40 million would be used for the completion of physical structures; N120 million for one year operational/running cost while the remaining N90 million would be a seed capital for indigent scholarship fund for a 6-year period of studies.

Stephen Ogbe, director, Dominican Vocation Support/ Project Coordinator, told newsmen in Lagos recently that the project was conceived and supervised by the Dominican Order.

On the timeline for the Dominican College Abuja to commence operation, Ogbe said the project is still at its early stage as the Order appeals to well-meaning Nigerians, corporate bodies, NGOS to identify with the project by supporting it financially.

He however said that the recent Nigeria Demographic Health Survey (NDHS) report shows that 13.2 million children were out-of-school, adding that the figure has increased over time due to dislocation of families caused by growing insecurity in the country and the devastating effect of Covid-19 pandemic.

According to him, having more donors and sponsors will enable children from economically disadvantaged backgrounds to enjoy quality education as children from stable backgrounds.

He further said that the college upon completion will provide a great succor for a number of out-of-school-children not only in the FCT, Abuja, but also across the country.

“Consequently, this is an open call for corporate bodies and individuals to seize the opportunity to sponsor as many indigent students as possible to the college. The management of the college has graciously reserved some slots for that purpose. Parents and guardians are also encouraged to seek admission for their wards”, he said.

The inauguration of the college is expected to hold in July 2021, while 2021/2022 academic activities will commence by September 2021.
