Governor Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi of Rivers State has said that the state’s N150 billion monorail project will be completed before he vacates office in 2015.
Amaechi stated that the contract is into two phases. Phase A will be completed before January 2014, while Phase B which will run from the city centre and terminates at Water Lines is to be completed in 2015.
The Rivers governor broke the news in Government House during youths’ interaction with Governor Amaechi with the theme ‘Consolidating on the Rivers of our dream’. The event also coincided with the marking of the governor’s 48 birthday.
He went ahead to say that the train has six coaches; each has a capacity of 70 passengers and will take just five minutes to the point (Water Lines) where passengers will disembark.
According to him, the train will freight about 40,000 persons a week when it starts operation.
Amaechi revealed that his administration has awarded new road contracts in the city.
He added that by the time he leaves office, a total of 16 flyovers would have been built in Port Harcourt. The chief executive advised youths to cultivate interest in agriculture as his administration is putting large sums of money into it, pointing out that fish farms at Buguma, Ndoni and Opobo have been completed and one will be built at Okrika.
On Banana, he stated that the farm has already employed about 4000 workers, while the oil palm plantation has engaged 15,000 workers including the unskilled workers.
