Ogun earmarks N6.5bn for water production

Monsurat Agboola, the general manager, of Ogun State Water Corporation, has disclosed that the government has earmarked N6.5 billion, representing 85 per cent of budgetary allocation set aside for capital expenditure, to be spent on water production and management across the state.

She, however, said that the capital expenditure spent on water production and distribution across the senatorial districts by the corporation was different from several millions of dollars, which the World Bank is currently spending on six water supply schemes, namely Ijebu-Ode, Ogere, Ijebu-Igbo, Ilaro, Sagamu and Abeokuta on increased water production capacity.

Speaking at the weekend at a community forum organised by the Society for Water and Sanitation (NEWSAN), Ogun State chapter, on impact of water and environment tagged, ‘Our water, our waste’, at Simeon Adebo Library in Abeokuta, the general manager flayed the human indiscriminate activities that contaminate and pollute water and environment.

Represented by Sakirudeen Salaam, director of planning and budget, Agboola said that the indiscriminate contamination and pollution of water and environment has a bad and costly effect on water, its production and management, adding that the indiscriminate water and environment pollution would not only harm good healthy living, but would also increase government expenses on water production and management.

She, however, urged the people of the state to avoid water and environment pollution which, she said, would have a badly recycled effect on environment and water, and could harm human health, just as she warned plumbers not to use substandard pipes and other pipe-borne water materials and ensure compliance with professional standard in pipes laying.

Also, the commissioner of environment, Lanre Tejuosho, lamented impotency of environmental law against environmental offenders, who still despite the provision of refuse disposal bins and waste management facilities across the state, dispose wastes indiscriminately into waters and the environment, saying government spends N5.4 million monthly for fuelling of 35 waste trucks.
