The Federal Government has revealed that Nigeria’s progress on maternal mortality has been slow. Speaking at the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Acceleration Framework (MAF) technical workshop recently in Abuja, Precious Gbeneol, senior special assistant to the President on MDGs, said Nigeria was moving at 4 percent rate annually, and needed to speed up, if the country hoped to achieve the MDGs target next year.
“Nigeria is desperate to attain the MDG 5 target of reducing maternal mortality to 250 deaths/100,000 life births by 2015,” she said, however, noting that the nation has also made efforts, moving from initial 800 deaths per 100,000 life births to the current ratio of 487.1 deaths per 100,000 life births.
