Former governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu was on Thursday jailed 12 years after he was found guilty in a fraud case of N7.2 billion filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, and presided over by Justice Mohammed Idris, found Kalu guilty, and accordingly, sentenced him to 12 years imprisonment
Kalu’s company, Slok Nigeria Limited, which he used to defraud Abia State, was forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria.
Also, Kalu’s aide, Jones Ude who served as the director of finance in Government House, at the time, was also sentenced to five years behind bars.
The presiding Judge, Idris described money laundering offence as a crime against humanity.
Orji, currently the Chief Whip of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, ruled Abia State for eight years from the return of democracy in 1999.
