David Lyon of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has won by a landslide in the Bayelsa State governorship election by defeating Douye Diri of the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Yenagoa on Sunday.APC won in six of the eight local government areas while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won in two.

APC won in Nembe, Brass, Yenagoa, Ekeremor, Southern Ijaw and Ogbia local government areas while PDP won in Sagbama and Kolokuma/Opokuma local government areas.

So far, APC has a total of 352,552 votes to PDP’s 143,172, a lead of 209,380.

Analysts believe that the people voted their conscience although the PDP has disclosed that it would go to court to challenge the result while rejecting the result for Southern Ijaw Local Government Area.

It is the first time that an opposition political party other than the PDP has won the governorship election in Bayelsa State since 1999, when Nigeria returned to democratic rule.

From the result, PDP won in Sagbama, which is Governor Henry Seriake Dickson’s local government area and Kolokuma/Opokuma which Diri’s local government area.

APC, as expected, scored impressive victories in Ogbia Local Government Area where the people are agrieved at the disrespect shown their leaders particularly former President Goodluck Jonathan.

It was the same in Nembe, Brass, and Southern Ijaw, which is Lyon’s local government area where the people had already decided to vote against the PDP.
