A new book titled: THE GIRL CHILD, written by a University of Lagos-trained Guidance and Counsellor professional, Ezichi Ruth Nwachukwu, was presented in Lagos recently as the latest literary work that celebrates the virtues of girls and their ability to break barriers and make the world a better place .

Nwachukwu, who is also a cleric’s wife, spoke on her motivation to author the book and why Igbo people should de-emphasise the notion that a boy-child is more valuable than the girl-child,

She said: “The motivation to write THE GIRL CHILD, came from self -decision made a long time ago, after my secondary education. It was also born out of self-determination to excel. I must say that the combination of family and educational background contributed a lot.

“My position in the family from birth has already cracked a challenge. In those days, in a home where the dichotomy is already existing, getting proper education as one desires that might not be easy. I was challenged by my late father’s usual saying that ‘if a person is not trained by her parents, can’t the person train himself or herself?’

“On the Societal view, the struggle for gender equality by women, is not really the purpose but for every Girl Child to know that when you believe in yourself to excel in life not minding everything that will stand as a barrier to your success. Work towards it as this justifies the PURPOSE of existence .

“The emphasis that Igbos give to a boy-child has caused a lot of harm in many families. But, I believe that a boy child deserves attention and support to overcome challenges and reach his full potentials if properly raised.

“The role of parenting cannot be underestimated because no child is born by mistake in the real sense of it. Proper parenting for children, irrespective of whether the child is a boy or girl is crucial. Parents are therefore urged to guide every child Spiritually Academically and Socially. Our children should be made to imbibe moral values from the early stage of life.”
