In Africa, many women and children in the informal sector are exposed to work hazards that are not covered by legislation, and lack access to Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) services.

Also, the Micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) have often displayed a lack of capacity and incentive to manage OSH risks while there are inadequacies in the organization of OSH services, including a lack of competent OSH practitioners and a disregard for workers’ rights.

According to the International Labour Organization (ILO), Africa lacks an up to date data on work hazards and the need to strengthen the field of occupational hazard prevention and control in Africa is urgent, as the current neglect carries a heavy burden of disease and disability.
