How EV Planet accelerates electric vehicle adoption in West Africa

Electric vehicles (EVs) are becoming a global priority as countries strive to meet climate targets.

According to Earth.Org, 17 nations already committed to 100% zero-emission vehicle targets or phasing out internal combustion engines by 2050. “The race to lead the EV market is intensifying, particularly between the US and China, where significant strides have been made in expanding this transformative industry.”

In Nigeria and across West Africa, the transition to electric mobility is gaining momentum, driven by the pioneering efforts of Bunmi Felix Olubamidele, CEO of EV Planet Ltd. The firm’s vision is not just about selling cars but revolutionising transportation to reduce the region’s carbon footprint and enhance mobility options.

“We are focused on several key initiatives to accelerate EV adoption in Nigeria and beyond,” Olubamidele told BD Weekender. “These initiatives encompass comprehensive technician training, establishing a robust charging infrastructure, converting existing vehicles to electric, and making affordable EVs widely accessible.”

Unlike conventional vehicles emitting pollutants throughout their lifecycle, EVs offer significant emission savings. “Electric vehicles generate minimal emissions over their lifetime, making them a crucial solution for reducing environmental impact,” the CEO said, emphasising the sustainability benefits driving their initiatives.

Furthermore, central to EV Planet’s strategy is ensuring there’s a skilled workforce capable of maintaining and repairing EVs. The marque partnered with BZB Training Institute in China to equip local technicians with world-class expertise. “This training ensures that EV owners in West Africa have access to reliable maintenance services,” Olubamidele said, highlighting the role of skilled technicians in building consumer confidence.

EV Planet Ltd introduced Chargify, an initiative to deploy charging stations across strategic locations in Nigeria, supporting practical EV ownership. These stations are located in malls and hotels, to ensure EV owners have convenient access to charging facilities. This network will extend throughout West Africa, facilitating broader EV adoption.

Another pivotal focus area is converting existing vehicles, from buses and trucks, into electric models. This approach accelerates the transition to sustainable transportation but also proves cost-effective for governments and organizations. “Converting these vehicles enhances operational efficiency and reduces reliance on fossil fuels,” Olubamidele said.

Similarly, the EV firm collaborates with Chinese brands to offer a diverse range of affordable and durable EVs, each supported by a comprehensive five-year warranty. “Our goal is to make high-quality EVs accessible to all segments of society,” the CEO said, highlighting their commitment to affordability and reliability in expanding EV accessibility.

Beyond selling cars, Bunmi Felix Olubamidele and EV Planet Ltd are shaping the future of transportation in Nigeria and West Africa. Their dedication to ensuring a seamless and beneficial transition to electric vehicles reflects their broader mission to drive sustainable change across the region.

Aside from commercial interests, the marque also drives social and environmental change. “We are dedicated to ensuring a seamless and beneficial transition to electric vehicles,” Olubamidele said, reflecting on their broader mission to reshape transportation norms across Nigeria and West Africa.
