In Q1 2024, Asia welcomed 82% of the international tourists compared to Q1 2019. The resurgence of tourism in China has also contributed to the region’s tourism growth.

Initially heavily impacted by COVID-19, China has relaxed many travel restrictions imposed since January 2020. Moreover, China has implemented visa-free entry policies for various EU nations, as well as countries like Malaysia and Thailand.

In contrast, the Asia-Pacific region has struggled to rebuild its tourism industry, with international tourist arrivals in 2023 reaching only 65% of pre-pandemic levels. Conversely, Europe, the Americas, and Africa managed to recover to at least 90% of their 2019 tourist volumes.

Data highlights the uneven global recovery in tourism. Remarkably, the Middle East emerged as the first region to surpass pre-pandemic levels in 2023, hosting 87.1 million international tourists, a 22% increase from 2019.

Notably, tourism volumes in the Middle East continued to soar in Q1 2024, with a 36% increase in international tourists compared to Q1 2019.

Utilizing UNWTO’s data on international tourist arrivals, Yahoo Finance compared figures for Q1 2024 and the full year 2023 with those of 2019. Countries hosting less than 1 million international tourists in either 2019 or 2023 were excluded from the analysis. This methodology helped identify countries with the highest growth in tourist arrivals.
