… demand equal punishment for all offenders

The recent incident involving an Ibom Air flight has escalated into a national debate on fairness and accountability, as Peter Obi, former Anambra State Governor, and many Nigerians have condemned what they describe as selective justice in the handling of the case.

The incident, which involved a passenger, Comfort Emmanson, allegedly assaulting a crew member, resulted in her public stripping, immediate arraignment, and remand at Kirikiri Prison.

The incident occurred on August 10, 2025, aboard Ibom Air Flight Q153 from Uyo to Lagos at 14:54 hours. According to the airline, the passenger refused to switch off her mobile phone during take-off in violation of international aviation safety regulations, sparking a confrontation that escalated into physical assaults on both flight crew and ground staff.

Obi, in a statement on Monday, apologised to the airline crew for the assault but criticised the “dehumanising” treatment of Emmanson, calling it “unnecessary” and “a height of rascality and abuse by our agencies.”

Obi questioned why Emmanson’s case was fast-tracked while other high-profile offenders in the aviation sector, including individuals accused of grounding flights and disrupting airport operations, remain unpunished.

“I must equally strongly condemn the dehumanising treatment meted out to this young woman. Stripping her publicly was not only unnecessary but also represents the height of rascality and abuse by our agencies.

“It is unacceptable that she was hurriedly taken to court and remanded, while someone who visibly held a plane from taking off and put hundreds of lives at risk is still at large, with government agencies and some state officials speaking up for him to be forgiven.

“This case is not just about one young woman; it is about the double standards that poison our justice system. Justice in Nigeria must never be about who is poor or powerless versus who has influence or access to government officials,” he said.

He urged the Minister of Aviation and relevant authorities to explain the apparent double standards.

The controversy has also set social media ablaze, with many Nigerians echoing Obi’s concerns. Users pointed to past incidents involving prominent figures, including a senator accused of shutting down an airport and a musician reportedly delaying a flight, who faced no such swift legal action.

Twitter user Arya Stark (@cute_pecky) likened the situation to Animal Farm, where some animals are more equal than others.

“I was waiting to get to the part where I would read about Kwam 1 being charged in court as well, alas! Nigeria is just another Animal Farm where some animals are more equal than others!!!

CryptoLord NE demanded accountability, asking, “What about the person who held a full aircraft hostage or the senator who shut down MM1 because he came late?”

Others, like Sir Dickson, insisted on consistency: “What is good for Kwam 1 is good for Kwam 2.

Either free the lady or send Kwam 1 to prison. The aviation industry is just mad. Where are the Government officials talking about “to err is human”

Is the babe not human, abi have they forgotten their Twitter password?”

Olúṣeun Onígbindé stressed the need for system-wide retraining for pilots, passengers, and security staff to prevent future incidents.

In the last week, there have been lapses in the responses by pilots, passengers, aviation security and aircraft ground staff.

“There’s an urgent need for a system wide training on protocols for a safer flight environment,”

On his part, Festus Keyamo, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, has ordered sweeping reforms in aviation safety and security procedures following Sunday’s violent altercation involving an Ibom Air passenger, Comfort Emmanson.

While commending the use of video evidence to aid prosecution, the minister condemned the public release of footage containing indecent exposure of the passenger during the altercation.

He described the action as “totally unacceptable” and “debas[ing] to womanhood,” directing that the staff responsible be identified and sanctioned.
