The looming crisis that threatened to paralyze Nigerian airport operations has been temporarily shelved after the Association of Ground Handling Aviation Nigeria (AGHAN) announced on Wednesday that it has put its planned industrial action on hold.

The decision to pause the strike comes after AGHAN received formal communication from the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON), a development the association described as a “positive step towards structured engagement.”

This correspondence is seen by industry insiders as a significant breakthrough in resolving long-standing friction over operational debts and service rate adjustments.

In a joint statement signed by Olaniyi Adigun, Chairman  and Ahmed Bashir, Vice-Chairman AGHAN confirmed that it is currently consulting with its members to review the airlines’ proposal.

“Accordingly, any previously contemplated industry actions remain on hold pending the outcome of ongoing engagements and the establishment of a clear resolution framework,” the association stated.

The threat of a strike had sent ripples through the economy, with the potential to ground both domestic and international flights.

However, AGHAN reiterated its commitment to the stability and safety of the Nigerian aviation industry.

“AGHAN remains fully committed to the stability, safety, and uninterrupted operations of the aviation industry in Nigeria. We strongly believe that all matters can be resolved through continued dialogue, mutual understanding, and adherence to due process.

“We therefore urge all parties and the general public to remain calm as structured engagements continue between stakeholders, with a view to achieving a lasting and mutually beneficial resolution,” AGHAN stated.

For now, the ground handling firms responsible for critical services like aircraft towing, passenger baggage handling, and ramp services will continue uninterrupted operations while stakeholders negotiate a lasting settlement.
