Osun farmers call for more silos to enhance food security

Some farmers on Tuesday in Osun, called on the State Government to provide more silos for the state in order to ensure food security at all times.

One of the farmers, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Alhaji Yinusa Ayandele, decried the existing inadequate number of silos, which, he said, was hampering food storage.

Ayandele recalled that the farmers in the state had made several appeals to  the government to make adequate farm storage facilities available but to no avail.

He said that the only way government’s efforts in reviving agriculture could yield good results was by ensuring the availability of enough storage facilities to mitigate the effects of food scarcity.

Also, Mr Ibikunle Oluwalogbon in Osogbo, implored the State Government to make the provision of farm storage facilities a priority for the purpose of guaranteeing food security.

Oluwalogbon observed that the state had not prioritised farm storage facilities, despite its giant strides in the area of agriculture.

He stressed the need for the provision of more silos in appropriate parts of the state to crown the government’s efforts in promoting agriculture.

Also, Mrs Anjola  Ibidun, who is the Managing Director, Iwalewa Farms, Ikire, called for the provision of adequate silos and other forms of farm storage facilities to aid food security.

‘’The problem is not peculiar to Nigeria alone, it is indeed a fallout of the lackadaisical approach of most African Governments to the agricultural sector.

‘’Even, there is the lack of diversification initiatives, where many African countries including Nigeria, remain consistently a mono-culture economy.

‘’The Osun Government should take the issue of farm storage facilities serious; assist farmers by helping them to store their harvested crops for the period of scarcity,’’ Ibidun said.
