Ordering the National Population Commission (NPC) to recount the local government areas it voided their 2006 census figures is not part of the census tribunal’s mandate, an official said on Tuesday.
The chairman of Census Tribunal ‘A’, Abraham Yisa, gave the explanation in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.
Yisa said the tribunal’s job was to verify the claims and evidence of both the complainants and the respondents whether or not they were factual before judgement.
According to him, after due consideration of claims by both parties the tribunal declares the population figures of the affected councils valid if it discovers that the census has been done properly.
Yisa added that when the tribunal verified the claims of both parties and discovers that the complainant’s claims of inaccurate enumeration was right it would as well declare the population figures voided.
