Rivers spends N500m monthly on waste management

Recycling alliance, Lagos State Government tackle packaging waste pollution

The Rivers State government spends over N500 million monthly to evacuate approximately 60,000 metric tons of waste generated by four local government areas in the state.

According to Ade Adeogun, the sole administrator, of Rivers State Environmental Sanitation Authority (RSESA), the cost includes refusing collection, disposal, sorting and fumigation.

The local government councils, according to Adeogun, who spoke through his media assistant, Olalekun Ige, are Obio-Akpor, Port Harcourt City, Eleme, Aluu, and some parts of Etche.

The sole administrator said 70 service providers were contracted to go round the said local government areas daily to collect refuse at the receptacle sites designated by the state government.

Adeogun said the authority does a lot of monitoring on the service providers to ensure that the work is efficiently done. He also revealed that the agency has provided “hot lines” with which anybody can call the sanitation authority informing it where there is refuse dump or were they are dumped carelessly.
