The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Kaduna State on Wednesday decried continued use of casual workers by the state government, saying some of the workers were being paid N5,000 as monthly salary.
The state NLC chairman, Adamu Ango, said in an address during the rally organorganised to mark Workers Day in Kaduna that some of the casual workers had served for up to 18 years.
He said the affected workers were engaged by the state Forest Management Agency and the Environmental Protection Agency.
“These workers who have been labelled as casual workers have been rendering service to these agencies in some cases for as long as 18 years and are being paid as little as N5, 000, as monthly salary”, he said.
The chairman also called on the state government to ensure timely payment of the salaries of local council workers and the arrears of their N18, 000 minimum wage.
Ango pledged the support of the union in blocking “areas of leakages” to shore up the revenue of the state to enable the administration save enough resources to provide more services to the people.
