Kano State government has pledged to achieve 80 per cent water provision for the people of the state before the end of the 2015 MDG target date.
Yunusa Adamu, the state commissioner for water resources, disclosed this on Friday at an event to mark the 2013 world water day in Kano. Adamu said that the government allocated 85 per cent of the budget to water-related projects in 2012 and 25 per cent this year.
“Water was a campaign issue and therefore rigorous and targeted interventions were made to address it. We have put in place various projects completed and ongoing, to tackle the problem of potable water ’’.
He said that setbacks such as the lack of pumping machines, generators for water plants as well as inadequate diesel had been tackled by the present administration in the last one and half years.
Adamu added that water was also being used for irrigation purposes in many parts of the state.
“Out of the 350 million litres to 450 million litres needed by the people of the state daily, we met on ground about 40 litres to 50 million litres.
