Manchester United have confirmed the signing of Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers in a deal worth £62.5 million, making him the club’s first major acquisition of the summer transfer window under manager Ruben Amorim.

Cunha, 26, is expected to sign a five-year contract at Old Trafford, with the option of a further 12-month extension. The deal is subject to a visa and final registration.

“Manchester United has reached an agreement with Wolverhampton Wanderers for the signing of Matheus Cunha,” the club said in a statement.

“Everyone at Manchester United looks forward to welcoming Matheus to Old Trafford.”

The Brazilian forward was in Manchester over the weekend to finalise the transfer. He joins United after an impressive season with Wolves, where he scored 18 goals in all competitions and was named the club’s Player of the Year.

Since arriving from Atletico Madrid in January 2023, Cunha has tallied 33 goals in 92 appearances for Wolves. The Midlands club confirmed the transfer as a record fee received, thanking Cunha “for his contributions in old gold” in their farewell message.

United reportedly activated the release clause in Cunha’s contract to secure his signature, bolstering an attack that lacked sharpness during a disappointing campaign.

Amorim’s side finished 15th in the Premier League and suffered a Europa League final defeat to Tottenham.

Cunha’s arrival is seen as a significant upgrade to United’s frontline, bringing creativity, flair, and clinical finishing. His versatility across the front line offers tactical flexibility for Amorim as he reshapes the squad.

Speaking during United’s recent post-season tour of Asia, Amorim hinted at a modest transfer window.
“We have a plan to bring in new players, of course, but our bigger plan is to improve the team we already have and invest in our academy,” Amorim said.
