The Lagos airport’s Hajj terminal, located at the Murtala Muhammad International Airport, (MMA2) has undergone a remarkable transformation, providing a world-class experience for pilgrims embarking on the sacred journey to Saudi Arabia.

In an interview with Adedayo Alale, the terminal manager, Pilgrims and Cargo Terminal, Muritala Muhammad International Airport, (MMIA), we got an insight into the terminal’s readiness for the 2025 Hajj operation.

A New Era of Comfort and Efficiency

The terminal, which has been renovated under the leadership of Olubunmi Kuku, managing director Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria boasts a modern and sleek design, with facilities that rival those of international airports. The new screening machines, cubicles for immigration and security personnel, and improved seating areas for pilgrims are just a few examples of the terminal’s enhanced infrastructure.

Separate Waiting Halls for a Smooth Experience

One of the standout features of the terminal is the separate waiting halls for males and females, each with a capacity of 3,000 pilgrims. This innovative design ensures that pilgrims can move through the terminal with ease, without the chaos and congestion that often characterized previous Hajj operations.

Modern Amenities for a Comfortable Journey

The terminal is equipped with state-of-the-art amenities, including air conditioning, LED displays, and CCTV cameras, to ensure the comfort and security of pilgrims. The LED displays provide important information and announcements, while the CCTV cameras monitor the terminal, ensuring a safe and secure environment for all.

Contactless Processes for a Seamless Experience

The terminal has implemented contactless processes, including automated machines and separate areas for different activities, to minimize interactions between pilgrims and staff. This not only enhances the efficiency of the terminal but also reduces the risk of errors and misunderstandings.

A Linguistics Team for Effective Communication

The terminal’s linguistics team is another key feature that sets it apart. The team is comprised of personnel who can communicate with pilgrims in different languages, including local languages, ensuring that everyone is informed and guided throughout the process.

A Capacity to Accommodate Thousands

The terminal has a capacity to accommodate approximately 6,000 pilgrims, including males and females. This is a significant increase from previous years, and Adedayo attributes it to the terminal’s modern infrastructure and efficient processes.

Cooperation with Airlines for a Smooth Operation

Alale emphasised the importance of cooperation with airlines to ensure a smooth and efficient operation. The terminal works closely with airlines to ensure that pilgrims are processed quickly and efficiently, minimizing delays and disruptions.

A World-Class Facility

The Lagos airport’s Hajj terminal is a testament to the government’s commitment to providing world-class facilities for pilgrims. As Alale noted, “We want to improve to that standard. Even when they came, they said, they thought they were in Saudi already.” The terminal’s modern amenities, efficient processes, and commitment to pilgrim comfort make it a haven for those embarking on the sacred journey.

In conclusion, the Lagos airport’s Hajj terminal is a shining example of innovation and efficiency. With its modern infrastructure, contactless processes, and commitment to pilgrim comfort, it is set to provide a world-class experience for thousands of pilgrims embarking on the Hajj journey.
