Julie Development Initiative (JDI), founded by Mayolein MacDonald of the Odual Kingdom in Rivers State, Nigeria, has pledged its commitment to driving a transformative push for quality education in rural Nigeria while reinforcing the bond between the Odual Kingdom and Aberdeen.

The initiative said it aims to mobilise significant resources up to N35 million to support the Adibom Community Primary School and other educational projects that will create a lasting impact on its communities.

The first phase of the project aims to benefit over 150 children by providing school supplies, uniforms, and improved learning conditions, while the donated funds at the Trinity Hall, Aberdeen, will help fund the ongoing project.

Speaking at the launch of the initiative, Mayolein MacDonald said the initiative is dedicated to ensuring that quality basic education becomes a reality for the youth in marginalised areas.

Mayolein, an engineer by training and a farmer by passion, said that beyond classroom learning, the JDI incorporates a holistic approach to development, engaging local female farmers and community leaders in sustaining school operations. This strategy not only secures the longevity of the initiative but also strengthens the local economy by creating employment opportunities around education.

While drawing from her own contrasting experiences, benefiting from world-class education in Aberdeen while witnessing the stark reality of underfunded schools in her native community, she said the JDI was established in honour of her late mother, Juliana MacDonald Jamala, whose rallying cry was that “the young must LEARN and GROW,”.

MacDonald said there are plans to make this an annual initiative, with expanding support to include both male and female students in marginalised communities across Nigeria.

According to her the initiative extends beyond education, involving local female farmers and community leaders to sustain school operations and empower the local economy.

She further said that the groundbreaking project aimed at reviving the historic Adibom Community Primary School,

“The success of the fundraiser for JDI recently held in Aberdeen not only raised critical funds for the school but also marked a strengthening of ties between the Odual Kingdom and Aberdeena partnership that is poised to change lives”.

“Through JDI, I am not only preserving my mother’s legacy but also building a future where education becomes a pathway to empowerment and community transformation,” she said.

As the Odual Kingdom and Aberdeen come together through this ambitious endeavor, the message is loud and clear: education is the bedrock of progress. Mayolein’s vision for a future where every child has access to quality education is already turning heads and inspiring communities.

Her work with the Julie Development Initiative stands as a testament to the power of unity and the transformative potential of education, a legacy that will undoubtedly resonate for generations to come.
