Bukola Saraki, senator representing Kwara State, has emerged President of the eighth Senate unopposed, following his nomination by Ahmed Sani, seconded by Dino Malaye.
Clerk of the National Assembly, Salisu Maikasuwa, who presided over the election, announced that 57 senators-elect were present for the election of the Senate President.
According to him, the quorum for the election of the Senate President is 38.
Also, Ike Ekweremadu, immediate past Deputy Senate President, was returned to the position with 54 votes after defeating Ali Ndume who polled 20 votes.
However, 51 All Progressives Congress (APC) senators-elect including Ahmed Lawan, George Akume were absent in the election of Saraki as they were said to be in a meeting at the International Conference Centre, Abuja.
