As Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal continues his rebuilding at Old Trafford, we take look players that might be coming in or going out.
From the news flying around the wires, it’s obvious that Manchester United’s top summer target for next season is misfiring Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale.
The 20-time champions of England are hoping to take advantage of the Welshman’s rough ride in Spain to lure him back to the Premier League where he took the world by storm.
Bale is not the only player Louis van Gaal wants on board to strengthen his squad for next season.
It’s likely to be a busy off-season at Old Trafford with the post-Ferguson and Moyes rebuilding set to continue.
Here, we look at who may be moving in and going out out of Old Trafford’s door:
Players Moving In
Gareth Bale
Bale is the man that would undoubtedly turn Manchester United into title contenders and the hope has to be that he simply gets fed up with his treatment at the Bernabeu.
It will be tough to convince him and Real Madrid president, Florentino Perez to give up on his Madrid dream and record signing for the club.
A Bale at the top of his game could even make United into European challengers once again in what would be an era-defining signing.
Hugo Lloris
Spurs are not willing to let go the Frenchman and have denied any clause in his contract to let him the depart White heart Lane for a set fee.
French reports insist there is a clause and whisper that he’s keen for a summer move.
We’ll see which happens to be true come the end of the transfer window, and whether the North London club can break their run of signing their star players to a new deal and selling them 12 months later.
His arrival would be entirely dependent on David De Gea being sold.
Mats Hummels
It’s no secret that the Borussia Dortmund centre-back is also top of Louis van Gaal’s shopping list.
It will be easier to spring him out of the Bundesliga giants now that Jurgen Klopp is gone. The fact that Ilkay Gundogan has declared his intention to leave will likely make it more difficult for Hummels to get out.
That said, money talks and if the player makes enough of a fuss it would be hard to keep him at the Bundesliga.
Ilkay Gundogan
With Hummels and Gundogan catching the eyes of van Gaal, it remain certain that the duo are important prospects for United.
While central defence has obviously been an issue for United, there is need to replace Michael Carrick since around 2011. The Geordie may be getting on now but he’s still hugely influential when he plays, and this summer simply has to see a deep-lying midfielder come in to take the load off Carrick and, eventually, succeed him.
Edinson Cavani
Manchester United’s attack hasn’t been biting and punching this season, summed up by the fact that their leading scorer – Wayne Rooney – has only netted 12 Premier League goals over the entire season.
With Falcao and Robin van Persie having failed to impress, there will be incoming forwards in the off-season, and Paris St Germain Cavani is one of the few top-level strikers that are likely to be available this summer.
Players Moving Out
David De Gea
This one is no surprise. Real Madrid’s interest in the Spaniard is well known as Iker Casillas’ decline becomes more evident and fans booing him. De Gea would get the opportunity to return home, Madrid would have their keeper for the next ten years and would manage to slip him in before any potential transfer ban imposed by FIFA.
Regrettably though, if De Gea doesn’t agree to a contract extension at Old Trafford then United will have no option to sell him this summer or lose him for a free transfer a year later.
Nani
The Portuguese winger signed a massive new contract under David Moyes and it could prove to be one of the more expensive mistakes in recent times by a club that hasn’t been short in that department.
A season-long stay with Sporting hasn’t been enough to convince the Portuguese club to buy him permanently so Nani is heading back to Old Trafford and there will be a ‘For Sale’ sign pinned to his head.
Javier Hernandez
Sick of sitting on the bench at Man United, Hernandez chose to sit on the bench at Real Madrid instead.
Initially looking for more first-team football, Chicharito got blinded by the gleaming white shirt and prestige of the Bernabeu club and this summer will finally find a club that will give him minutes.
Rafael Da Silva
Rafael is simply not Louis van Gaal’s cup of tea and the Brazilian is likely to be packing his bags out of Old Trafford.
Jonny Evans
The Northern Irishman has never adequately filled the boots of Nemanja Vidic or Rio Ferdinand as the experienced head of United’s defence, leaving them somewhat rudderless at the back and struggling for leadership.
He isn’t good enough on the ball to star in a Van Gaal back four for next season.
Angel Di Maria
A move that simply hasn’t worked out for a variety of reasons, United find themselves in the unusual situation of being able to offload Di Maria even for a minimal loss.
It seems an opportunity that will be too good to miss out on, particularly if they’re to have a chance of getting Bale.
Anders Lindegaard
Unhappy and keen to leave, Louis van Gaal won’t be standing in his way.
