Suspected Boko Haram Islamist militants on Wednesday attacked Maiduguri, Borno State from a cashew plantation, a few kilometres from the Giwa Barracks, a military source said.
Residents said they heard heavy shooting on the outskirts.
“I’m trapped near the University of Maiduguri now,” Kabir Olaoye, a resident, told Reuters by phone. The shooting began around 6:30pm, he said.
Residents of the city who are living around the southern flank of the town had to defy the 7pm. curfew to flee.
An SSS operative, who craved anonymity, told journalists, “The attack is going on in Kayamla village right at the outskirts of Maiduguri.” Kayamla is about 10km away from Maiduguri town.
Col. Tukur Gusau, spokesman of the 7 Division Nigerian Army, told journalists troops have moved in to bring the situation under control.
