Continental Reinsurance plc, Africa’s largest private reinsurer outside of South Africa, has introduced Africa’s first pan-African insurance and reinsurance Journalism Awards.
According to the company, journalists from every African country across the continent are invited to participate in the Continental Reinsurance Journalism Awards 2015.
The journalism awards have been launched to improve and develop insurance and reinsurance reporting in Africa and to encourage journalists to develop their knowledge and expertise, as well as recognise the outstanding work of journalists from across Africa.
Femi Oyetunji, group managing director/CEO, Continental Reinsurance, said: “The insurance and reinsurance sector has a valuable role to play in Africa’s economic growth and development and we want to recognise the respected contribution of the media to the sector’s growth.
“The awards are an extension of our continued commitment to the advancement of excellence in the industry.”
Continental Reinsurance said it was very committed to advancing the re/insurance sector in Africa, saying “the company offers training sessions across Africa on various aspects of the industry and invites journalists to attend the training in their region.”
The four categories in the 2015 awards are: Best re/insurance feature article; Best re/insurance news reporting; Best re/insurance industry analysis and commentary, and Pan-African reinsurance journalist of the year award.
An international judging panel comprising industry experts and academics in journalism will judge the 2015 entries. The judging panel will evaluate all submitted material according to the quality of information and how it contributes to raising awareness of the insurance and reinsurance sector in Africa.
Entry criteria are that each entrant must submit their published article together with their name, media organisation, the date the article was published, their brief profile and photo, together with a 250-word motivation for writing their editorial article. It added that all submissions must be submitted by December 31, 2015.
The Continental Reinsurance Journalism Awards 2015 winners will be announced at a ceremony in April 2016.
“As a pan-African reinsurance company, operating in over 44 African markets, Continental Reinsurance wants to ensure that every journalist reporting on insurance and reinsurance in every African country is invited to participate in showcasing their work,” the company stated.
