Nigerian elite climbed accessible public ladder, then hide from children of the poor – Atedo Peterside

Atedo Peterside, the founder of Stanbic IBTC and Anap Foundation, said the Nigerian elite who rose to the top by climbing an accessible public ladder have hid the same ladder, making it difficult for children of the poor to rise.

Peterside said this on his X account on Saturday while reacting to the appointment of Chief Justice Ariwoola’s in-law, Nyesom Wike’s wife, and others as judges of federal and state courts.

The economist lamented that the elite have rigged and bastardized the recruitment processes they benefited from and made it difficult for the poor to rise.

“So true. A rapacious elite who got there by climbing an accessible public ladder based on equal opportunity, have rigged & bastardised recruitment processes in order to make it difficult for children of the poor to rise in Nigeria today – they have hidden the ladder from others,” Peterside said while reacting to a comment on X.

In another forum, Peterside had earlier lamented that the Nigerian elite are competing in a game called ‘state capture‘.
State capture, he said, is a situation where a country is designed to only work for the few rather than the majority of the people.
