Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has postponed the announcement on the new minimum wage “until further details from the federal government,” are made available to guide its implementation.
“As we await further details on the minimum wage from the federal government, I assure you that we will swiftly implement any new directive to ensure fair compensation for our workers,” he said.
Eno however, announced work-free days for civil servants to engage in farming activities.
According to the governor, civil servants will “dedicate every first and third Friday of the month to farming activities in Akwa Ibom State, saying that it is part of efforts towards “realising the food security and sufficiency goals of the state government.”
He further said: “I’ve declared these days as work-free to enable workers to engage effectively in farming. Let’s roll up our sleeves and contribute to our food security efforts.
“Moreover, our commitment to agriculture as a sustainable solution remains steadfast. Let’s embrace these designated farm days as an opportunity to contribute to our food security efforts.
“We have approved and granted refund of outstanding N7.5percent contributory pension scheme; we have paid three months promotions, we have released 2023 promotions, we granted approval for the conduct of service examination, we have invested in affordable housing unit for our workers in Ibiono Ibom Local Government.
Speaking during the Labour Day celebration May 1, at the Uyo township stadium, Eno also disclosed that over N16.1 billion has been released for the payment of gratuities “with an additional N2billion approved just last month.”
He also said that additional infrastructure projects like the 3rd Ring Road were underway to improve connectivity of the workforce.
He thanked the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) for their unwavering support and solidarity.
“Your recognition of our efforts fuels our determination to do more for the people of Akwa Ibom State. Together, let’s continue to prioritise the welfare of our workers and build a brighter future for all,” he said.
Earlier in his remarks, the State Chairman of the NLC, Sunny James lauded Governor Eno for fulfilling his campaign promises to Akwa Ibom workers, stressing that the organised labour is never quick at praising governors but said that given the strides of Governor Eno in less than one year in office, he deserves a loud ovation.
