Army confirms two soldiers involved in theft case at Dangote refinery

The Nigerian Army has expressed concern over the alleged involvement of two of its personnel in a reported case of theft at the Dangote Refinery in Lagos.

In a statement issued by Onyema Nwachukwu, the director of army public relations, the incident was described as “totally unacceptable and highly regrettable,” emphasising that it does not reflect the ethics and values of the army.

The incident, which occurred under the watch of vigilant troops and private security operatives at the refinery, led to the identification and subsequent arrest of the two suspects.

Preliminary investigations, according to Nwachukwu, revealed that the soldiers were allegedly hired by a civilian contractor, identified only as Smart, under the pretext of recovering armored cables left behind on the refinery’s premises.

However, as the soldiers approached the security post with Smart, he purportedly absconded, leaving them behind.

Further investigations are underway to ascertain the extent of the soldiers’ involvement in the theft.

Nwachukwu noted that the stolen cables have been recovered and are now in safe custody.

The NA is collaborating with the management of Dangote Refinery to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.

The statement reiterated the NA’s commitment to meting out appropriate disciplinary measures to the perpetrators, reaffirming its stance against any form of criminality within its ranks.

The NA emphasized its dedication to instilling values of discipline, integrity, and accountability among its personnel, promising to uphold ethical behaviours.
