Fire destroys part of WAEC’s Yaba office

Sections of the national office of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC’s) in Yaba, Lagos State was destroyed by fire on Wednesday.

The examination body confirmed the incident in a statement signed by Moyosola Adesina, the head of public affairs department at WAEC. Adesina said the fire started in the early hours of Wednesday, but was swiftly doused by a combined team of fire fighters, and no life was lost.

“The management of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) wishes to inform the general public that there was an early morning fire incident at the WAEC National Office, Yaba, Lagos. It was swiftly contained by a combined team of fire fighters,” the statement read in part.

It was learnt that the fire outbreak was caused by power surge in one of the offices and spread rapidly.

According to eye-witness report, the fire broken out at the middle of penthouse housing the council’s secretariat in Yaba and many people who were trapped in the building were seen frantically calling for help.

The fire was put out around 8 am and the situation is normalised, however, evacuation operation is still ongoing as at the time of filing this report.

Adesina expressed the delight of the council that no life was lost and that all important documents and records are intact.
