Judiciary workers suspend 2-month strike

Judicial Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN)

Members of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) have resolved to suspend their over two-month strike from Monday June 14.

The leadership of the union reached the decision on Wednesday during the group’s National Executive Council meeting which held at the conference hall of the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria in Abuja.

The decision is coming after the National Judicial Council (NJC), in a meeting with JUSUN leaders and the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Ibrahim Muhammad on Tuesday June 8, appealed to the striking court workers to put an end to the industrial action in the interest of the country and the suffering court users.

In a 9-point resolution contained in a communiqué, JUSUN NEC condemned the actions of the Governors of Kaduna, Plateau and Benue States for withholding salaries of Judiciary in their various States for months and urge all Governors involved to do the needful; agreed that there shall be introduction of peculiar allowance throughout the State and Federal Courts.

“The NEC discussed extensively and after putting so many issues into consideration i.e. the intervention of NJC and other stakeholders, the NEC has resolved that the strike is hereby suspended.

“NEC plead with the NJC, the Presidential Implementation Committee, Attorney General of the Federation, Accountant General of the Federation and all stakeholders to see that the issue of Judiciary Financial Autonomy is laid to rest finally as provided for in Section 81 (3), 121 (3), and 162(9), of -1999 Constitution as amended.

“NEC frowns at the deduction of salary of JUSUN members of Bayelsa State and request that the deducted sum be restored forthwith,” the communiqué stated.
