Container loaded trailer falls on commercial bus along Lagos-Badagry road

Tragedy struck yesterday at Iyana-Iba, near the Lagos State University, Ojo when a fully-loaded 40 feet container fell on top of an 18 seater LT commercial bus, but no life was lost.

The ugly incident which occurred on Monday night and which has worsened the daily gridlock on the corridor was as result of the deteriorated condition of many portions of the Lagos-Badagry road; an ECOWAS region gateway that has suffered many years of neglect, with little or no priority attention given to it by the immediate past government of the state.

Fallen of trailers and other articulated vehicles, including private vehicles along the axis has become a recurring decimal worsened by lack of towing equipment.

BusinessDay reporter who drove past the scene late Monday night when the incident happened learnt that, the fallen container and the affected commercial are yet to be evacuated from the scene up till Tuesday morning due to lack of functional equipment by the Lagos Response Unit that is attached to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).

Meanwhile, a visit to the premises of the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA) Zonal Unit17, Ojo, located at a hidden inaccessible area Iyana-Isashi office presents a picture of traffic management agency that is incapacitated.

Investigations reveal that in the past four years, the LASTMA zonal unit that covers such critical corridor with high vehicular, motorcycle and human traffic has been operating without a functional operational vehicle.

The LASTMA covers from the Agbara customs checkpoint to Abule Ado U-turn along the Lagos-Badagry expressway, the Iyana Iba-LASU road  and Alaba International market.
