Obasanjo refuses to talk on presidential election

Former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, Tuesday, refused to talk on the just concluded presidential election.

Obasanjo, who was ‘Father of the day’ at the presentation of a book: “Elections in Nigeria: The Long Road to Democracy”, said he would have loved to speak on the last presidential election in which President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC), was declared winner of the election, but for the fact that the case is now in court.

“I don’t want to talk about the presidential election now because it will be sub-judicial, it is already in court,” he said.

He had backed the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) , Atiku Abubakar, in the election, while campaigning vigorously against Buhari’s candidacy.

Describing election as bedrock of democracy, Obasanjo said not all elections are democratic.
He added: “If elections are fundamental to democracy, without integrity any election is a farce. It cannot underpin democracy and god governance. Election without integrity cannot reinforce the confidence of the electorate in the system.”

The book written by Prof. Abudllahi Shehu and presented to the public at Shehu Yar’dua Centre, Abuja, yesterday, according to Obasanjo, came at a good time.

He said: “Until now many people were reluctant to wrote, talk about national issues but now we have lots writings by academics, activists, artists, who are courageous enough to write.”

Among the dignitaries who graced the presentation include former military head of state, Gen. Yakubu Gowon, human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), among others.
