Senate committee approves N30,000 New Minimum Wage

Nigerian-Senate
The Senate Adhoc Committee for New National Minimum Wage has recommended N30,000 monthly as National Minimum Wage, BusinessDay can authoritatively report.
The committee which met last Wednesday, is set to submit its report to the Committee of the Whole for consideration and adoption at Tuesday plenary.
The committee is chaired by Deputy Senate Majority Whip, Francis Alimikhena (APC, Edo).
A member of the Committee who spoke to BusinessDay on condition of anonymity, revealed that the panel will submit its report on Tuesday.
“Barring any unforseen circumstances, our report will be submitted by Tuesday. We increased the Minimum Wage from N18,000 to N30,000. Our decision was informed by the fact that this was the actual amount recommended by the tripartite committee set up by the President,” the source who spoke on condition of anonymity, said.
It would be recalled that the House of Representatives had on January 29 approved N30,000 monthly as the new Minimum Wage. The amount is N3,000 higher than the N27,000 which President Muhammadu Buhari earlier presented to the National Assembly in the executive bill.
However, the N30,000 was in tandem with the recommendation by the tripartite committee set up by the President on the minimum wage, which submitted its report in November 2018.
But following a meeting of the National Council of State, President Buhari eventually presented a minimum wage bill of N27,000 to the National Assembly for approval.
