The Senate has confirmed the appointment of Modibbo Tukur as the pioneer Director of the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU).
It would be recalled that in 2018, the Senate established the NFIU as an independent entity from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The confirmation followed adoption of the report of the Committee on Anti-Corruption and Financial Crimes at Wednesday plenary.
Presenting the report, Chairman of the Committee, Chukwuka Utazi (PDP, Enugu) observed that there was no adverse security report against the nominee.
He said scrutiny of the documents submitted to the panel showed that the nominee possessed the necessary academic and administrative experience for the position.
In his contribution, Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, urged the nominee to remain neutral in the discharge of his duties.
Also, Senate President Bukola Saraki who presided over the session, recalled that the Unit was created by the National Assembly in 2018 to prevent Nigeria’s expulsion from Egmont Group, even as he called for neutrality and professionalism from the nominee.
