In a bid to ensure efficiency and human component for development, the University of Ilorin management says it has trained about 2,260 staff members internationally and locally. Just as it executed 82 projects within five years.
Abdulganiyu Ambali, a professor of Vetenary Medicine and outgoing vice chancellor of the university, disclosed this while briefing journalists on his five years stewardship and activities lined up to mark the 33rd convocation ceremony of the institution.
Ambali said: “As the human components of development are very vital, it gives me satisfaction that in the last five years, two staff members in various categories have benefited from our training opportunities. Some 1,711 academic staff and 376 non-teaching staff have enjoyed local learned conference sponsorship while 148 academic and 25 non teaching staff have been sponsored to international conference over the last five years.”
Speaking on the projects, which according to him, 69 have been commissioned and 13 to be commissioned next week, the outgoing VC said: “Over the years, the university has embarked on scores of projects which include: “Faculty of phase III, (Microbiology) building, Faculty of Pharmaceutical sciences complex, Unilorin water project complex, college of health sciences skill acquisition laboratories, renovation of university of international secondary school, 2000-seater multipurpose hall complex, department of material and metallurgical engineering building, central research laboratories building, researchers’ lodge, and Lecture theatres for faculties of agric, law, education, physical and life sciences.”
Others are, “Unilorin business school complex, geological resort centre at aran-orin, workshop for the faculty of engineering and technology, medical assessment centre, lecture halls for the faculties of management science, education and engineering and technology, faculty of arts complex, sit-out for students in various faculties, department of optometry and vision science project, veterinary teaching hospital complex, hostel for college health science and NLNG engineering research centre, among others.”
He however commended the university management for supporting him in the administration of the institution in the last five years stressing that, “since 2013 till date, Unilorin has remained the most subscribed institution in Nigeria and we have the highest rate of admission applicants in sub-Saharan Africa due to uninterrupted academic calendar and standard.”
He added, “As President Mohammadu Buhari, duly represented last year convocation said: “Our dream to have world class universities and centre of excellence among the community of the nations cannot be realized if our universities open and close their gate to students at every whim.”
The event which was held at the university auditorium was well attended by members of the university community as well as the Vice Chancellor designate, Sulyman Age Abdulkareem, professor of engineering who according to the outgoing VC said will assume office on Monday.
The University graduates a total of 7, 246 students for 2016/2017 academic sections. 89 first class; 1,932 second class upper division; 3,727 second class lower division; 1,309 third class; 117 Pass; two Aegrotat graduands; 70 MBBS graduands
