Lagos state governor, Akinwunmi Ambode has directed the newly sworn-in 20 local government and 37 local council development areas to quickly mobilise to rid streets within their jurisdiction, of wastes.

Ambode gave the order while responding to question bordering on the increasing heaps of refuses in most parts of the state metropolis, at the 5th quarterly town hall meeting held at Badore, Ajah. The quarterly town hall meeting provides a platform for the governor to interact with the people and feel their pulse in relation to governance in the state.

Ambode said the council chairmen have been directed to, as a matter of priority, to get to work and ensure the wastes are carted away from the streets, in the interim, pending the full implementation of the Cleaner Lagos Initiative (CLI) from September.

The CLI is a Public Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement that would see an international  investor and expert in waste management, bringing in 500 compactor trucks to collect and process domestic wastes in all parts of Lagos, at no direct cost to the government.

He said the present arrangement with the PSP operators has proven insufficient to take care of 13,000 tonnes of waste generated daily in Lagos.
