Minister of Power Works and Housing Babatunde Fashola, on Monday commissioned Kukwaba 2X 60MVA 132/33KV transmission sub-station‎, which is a project on expanding transmission capacity for electricity distribution, while also meeting the energy needs of the Federal Capital Territory residents.
‎Louis Edozien, permanent secretary in the Ministry of Power Works and Housing, represented the minister at the commissioning ceremony, said the sub-station would address issues of overloading and increase sources of transmission supply in the capital city, while also improving energy distribution to power consumers.
‎Speaking further on the need for timely completion of projects, Fashola said, “We must also focus on timely completion of projects. This is a project that was probably conceived about 10 years ago, and it is just being concluded. The Contract for the construction of this project was originally awarded to a foreign company-North China Engineering Company, which abandoned the project after executing the offshore materials and equipment procurement. News Engineering was subsequently engaged in 2011 to execute the outstanding construction work.”
‎While assuring on Federal Government’s commitment in supporting indigenous company, he said, “This is the first power sub-station built by an indigenous company-News Engineering (NIG) Limited, in supporting and encouraging Nigerian enterprise.
Recall, the acting President recently captured that commitment of the Federal Government in the recently signed Executive Orders. This is a call for the local company to take a clue from the excellent quality of services delivered by this company.”
‎Meanwhile, the Managing director of Transmission Company of Nigeria Usman Gur Mohammed said the project would be handed over to Abuja Electricity Distribution Company to ensure increase in the electricity needs of the residents.
He states further that, “For Abuja, we have concluded plans to build five additional subs-stations, apart from this Kukwaba, and they include, one in Apo,‎Kuje, Gwarimpa and the other in Lokogoma. We have done the pre-contract qualification, and we have given the tender to the contractors”
In his earlier remarks, Ernest Mupwaya, managing director of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, said power supplied to energy consumers in Abuja would appreciate as they are being fed with more options for transmission.
“Today, we are receiving this facility on behalf of our Customers. The immediate benefit is that customers who have been fe‎d with a low light from Katampe, which unfortunately is unable to meet the increase load, would have this good alternative,”‎he said.
Accordingly, he stated further that, “We are going to supply that line from this sub-station, and doing so, we have created a relief capacity at Katampe, would see other areas such as Maitama, Mpape, Life Camp and Gwarimpa, being able to take more load.”
This sub-station will be able to take more load in FCT. Our effort is to re-configure line to take advantage of these facilities, so that our customers can have more than one source of supply. In doing so, they would see improvement in part of the voltage being supplied, and the hours of supply, he said further.
