President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the reconstitution of the governing council of 23 out of 40 federal universities.
The appointment, according to a statement from the Federal Ministry of Education, is for four years in the first instance.
The statement explains that those affected are institutions whose governing councils’ tenure have elapsed or would expire on April 9, 2017.
The statement indicates that the affected universities and their chairmen are: AVM Muktar Mohammed, ABU Zaria; Mike Olorunfemi, UNN; Wale Babalakin, UNILAG; John Ofem, FUTO; Nkechi Nworgu, UNICAL, Joshua Waklek, UI; Niniola Akanbi, ATBU; Ibrahim Gambari, BUK; J. N. Waku, FUTA; Shehu Abdullahi Zuru, FUPRE; Femi Odekunle, FUT Minna, and Bello Sulaiman, MOUA Umudike.
Others are: M. Bukar Zarma, Modibbo Adama University of Technology, Yola; Aziz Bello, NAU, Akwa; Sani Maikudi, UniAbuja; Aboki Zhawa, FUNAAB; Alkassum Abba, UniAgric, Markudi, and Isah Ashiru, UNIBEN.
Also, Jibril Oyekan, UniIlorin; Tony Momoh, UniJos; Biodun Adesanya, UniMaiduguri; A. C Awujo, UniUyo, and Pearl Enajere, Usman Danfodio University, Sokoto.
The statement from the ministry further notes that those institutions that were not affected were the ones whose governing council were inaugurated in March 2016, and other ones that were recently re-constituted in January 2017.
The statement added that in making the appointments, President Buhari took into cognizance, the requirements for membership into governing councils which includes; a minimum of University degree, high integrity, and commitment to educational development of Nigeria.
“In addition to that was a due consideration to geographical spread, in other to reflect federal character and foster sense of belonging.
The council, according to the Ministry, would be inaugurated on a soon to be announced date.
