As part of his Community Development projects (CDS) to mark the 2017 Commonwealth Day, a National Service Youth Corps (NYSC) member serving with the Cross River State House of Assembly Mohammed Thompson has donated Educational materials worth over N1.7million Naira to Cross River State university of Technology (CRUTECH).
Presenting over two hundred books to the Vice Chancellor of the university Owan Enoh at the senate chambers, recently, Thompson said there was need to contribute towards the development of education especially at this era of non-availability of books in our educational institutions and the deteriorating reading culture of students.
“We have libraries where books are outdated; books that promote quality education are not there” Thompson lamented.
The corps member who had also donated items worth over N500, 000 to internally displaced people of Bakassi wants to draw the attention of government to the deplorable condition of these silently suffering Nigerians.
He called on the state government and people of goodwill to support the donation of books to schools especially institution of higher learning.
Receiving the books on-behalf of the management of the university, the VC said he was excited to see a corps member give back society from his lean income. The corps member demonstrated that he did not only get a degree, but he earned.
In a related development the Former military governor of old Rivers State and chief executive officers (CEO) of the first privately owned oncology centre in Nigeria Anthony Ukpo has disclosed that because of his diagnostic centre, the University of Calabar has been given the franchise to offer masters and doctorates in Radiography.
Ukpo who is also a former information minister stated this in Calabar in an interview session after been conferred Honorary Doctorate of law by the University of Calabar. Ukpo who thanked the university management for the award urged the young generation to put more effort in school and socio economic development of the country.
Earlier, Zana Akpagu, Vice chancellor of the University said his administration is committed to waging an endless war through the elimination of ghost workers from the university’s payroll, stoppage of emoluments of staff who received salaries from two employments; prompt prepayment audit and delivery of capital project verification report among others.
According to the VC his administration is poised to improve the infrastructural landscape of the institution through the construction of faculties of medicine and dentistry buildings, of Engineering building complex and lecture theatre, construction of faculties of Education, and Academic building, of Department of physics and computer science, and construction of two 500 seat lecture room and library for faculty of dentistry among others.
