The Osun state government accused designated banks handling revenue collection of frustrating tax and levy payers by refusing to give them relevant information about the accounts they are handling for government.
Addressing a meeting held with management of banks doing business with government, State’s Account General Auditor General for state and local governments and Chairman of Osun State Internal Revenue Service, Dayo Oyebanji, said that report had reached the Board that some banks licenced to be collecting taxes and levies complain of poor internet network whenever people come to pay their taxes and levies.
He added that some banks also deliberately keep state funds longer than necessary, before transferring them into government coffers.
Oyebanji noted that the excuse of bad internet network would henceforth be not accepted by government, adding that poor service being experienced by people that want to pay taxes and levies may force government to opt out of doing business with the affected banks.
He however called on residents of the state that anyone paying taxes or levies should immediately verify the validity of the receipt at the Board office at government secretariat or any tax station of the board.
