Civil servants in Umuahia are yet to return to work after the New Year public holiday declared by the Federal Government.

A correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) who visited the state secretariat on Tuesday reports that activities were low with a few workers going in and out of the complex.

Most of the major roads linking the secretariat, which were usually busy during week days, and the car park, were scanty.

A civil servant who preferred anonymity told NAN that most of the workers who reported for work left their offices before the official closing time.

He said that the non-payment of salaries could be one of the factors responsible for the low turn-out of workers because most of them could have exhausted their money during the festive period.

Another civil servant who would also not want to be named attributed the low turn-out to the fact that many of the workers travelled to their various communities and were yet to return.

He expressed optimism that activities at the secretariat would pick up before the end of the week.
