The Nigeria Association of Auctioneers (NAA) has said the elections into its executive positions held November were conducted in a free and fair manner contrary to reports circulating.
The Chairman of the association’s electoral Committee, Joseph Mayange starred this while briefing journalists on the outcome of the election.
He said contrary to what some aggrieved members of the Board of Trustees are reporting, the election was conducted without any complaints from any of the observers. He said the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, King Alfred Diete-Spiff credited the election as a successful one.
He added that for three members of a 9-member Board of Trustees to issue a press release, canceling the election is an anomaly as the Board even when properly constituted lacks the constitutional power to cancel the association’s election.
He said a restraining order as been issued against the aggrieved members of the Board by an Abuja High Court sitting in Maitama.
Meanwhile, the President of the Association, Aliyu Kiliya who had earlier also denounced the alleged cancellation of the election, has said Nigeria government loses over a trillion naira yearly due to inadequate synergy with auctioneers.
He said there is need for proper collaboration from government to engage the services of registered auctioneers when the need to auction government properties arises.
He added that the major challenges the association has been facing is the fact that government at federal, state and local levels have not been following the laid down guidelines when it comes to auctioning government properties.
“Auctioning should not be means of giving political favours”, he said.
He said the many instances where government could not engage the services of registered auctioneers were as a result lack of awareness by most public servants on the procedures to follow to generate huge revenues for the government through auctioneering.
He called on the government to seek for means to engage the association so as to help generate revenues that can take the country out of its present economic recession.
“A lot of government properties are littered all over the country in different agencies, these properties can be auctioned to generate revenue for the country”, he said.
