The House of Representative committee on tertiary education and services, has called on the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND), to intervene in restoring the infrastructure of learning destroyed in the north eastern part of the country.
Aminu Suleiman, the chairman of the committee, who made the call Monday in Abuja, during an oversight function at TETFund, also called on TETFund to fast track the infrastructural development of the 12 new universities located across the country.
He lamented that, all the infrastructure in primary, secondary and tertiary institutions in all the north eastern states, have been destroyed by insurgents.
Suleiman said: “We will want you to help us restore the infrastructure in our schools in the north east.
” Infrastructure of institutions in all the north east have been destroyed. There is need to put up a master plan to see how we can address these issues in the affected areas.”
The committee pledged support towards ensuring the mandate of TETFund in addressing the rot and deterioration of infrastructure cross tertiary institutions in the country, to the benefit of Nigerians.
The Executive Secretary TETFund, Abdullahi Baffa, disclosed that the body under his watch, was determined to restructure most of the infrastructure in tertiary institutions, which he lamented were below standard and small.
According to him, the environment of learning has a major role in the quality of education attained by students.
“The era of having match box structures in our universities are gone, there are buildings that are too small to accommodate students.
“What we need are massive buildings that are big and beautiful. A student should not gain training in a match box structure from primary to secondary school and still end up in a match box structure in the university,” he added.
