The future of human interaction with technology is projected to grow in massive proportions with gesture and motion control becoming crucial for certain forms of human-computer interaction in the coming years according to a new study released by Juniper Research.

At the present adoption level with growth projected at 168 million by the end of 2016, the report estimates that there will be as many as 492 million motion and gesture-tracking devices in early 2020. This represents a 280 percent growth rate.

The new research Gesture, Motion&Haptic: Future Use Cases, Shipments & Revenue Forecasts 2016-2020 projects that motion and gesture-tracking technology will largely be on devices as wearables, virtual reality (VR) headsets and user accessories and others.

In a statement, Juniper said it expects nearly 50 percent of all wearables and almost all VR to use the technology by 2021 while for more established platforms like PCs and smartphones, usage will remain low, holding back adoption across devices as a whole, unless the user interface (UI) paradigm changes.

For products like virtual reality headsets, motion and gesture tracking are an essential method of interaction. Being able to track your hands, head, and body movement enables you to have an immersive experience with the system.

Smartwatches and glasses are also crucial for the technology. Given that screens and small touch-sensitive surfaces limit a wearable’s usability, any improvement in motion tracking and adding gesture control will make them inherently more useful and more adoptable to many people.

“VR and wearables have shown the way that gesture and haptics can provide fresh ways to interact with technology,” James Moar author of the research noted. “The game changer for other platforms will be when technology firms are brave enough to reinvent their UIs to incorporate gesture and motion, rather than considering it an optional add-on.”
