Microsoft’s Internet Explorer shed some 40 million users in one month as Google maintained its market share with Chrome browser holding a 55 percent of users in the month of October according to latest data from NetMarketShare.

Some 0.58 percent users of Internet Explorer which dropped 2.5 percent – an equivalent of 40 million, migrated to the Chrome in October bringing the total number of deserters near the one third of a billion mark. The combined user share of Internet Explorer and Edge browser was at 28.4 percent for the same month representing a drop of 2.3 percentage.

The rest of migrating users from Microsoft went to Mozilla’s Firefox which user share grew about 2 percent to peak at 11.1 percent from 9.19 in September. Firefox appears to be recovering from a period of uncertainty that has dogged growth in its user base. In August the browser dropped to 7.69 percent but it quickly recovered. October however was the largest single month boost to Firefox’s user share going by ComputerWorld’s tracking which was also recently released.

Although Chrome maintained its dominance, its growth in the last two months slowed according to the report. It added only a fraction of its share in October, just over a third of the average over the last 12 months.
