Peter Obi, former governor of Anambra State, Donald Duke, former governor of Cross River State, and Chidi Odinkalu, former chairman, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), are among those to speak at the 11th Aelex Annual Lecture scheduled to hold November 9.
The event, which will take place at the Agip Recital Hall of the Muson Centre Onikan, is expected to attract key players in government, policy, law and business to discuss critical issues in the administration of states.
The topic, “Making States Work” will consider the elements required to sustain each of our 36 states, especially as Nigeria goes through a recession. The format for the lecture will be that of a panel having former state government executives, financial experts and a social commentator sharing their views.
Known for its distinctive selection of resource persons, the organising firm, Aelex Legal Practitioners and Arbitrators, has once again put together a remarkable line-up of highly experienced discussants to address these vital issues in governance.
The moderator is Donald Duke, while Peter Obi, Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, president of the Council, Nigerian Stock Exchange, Isaac Babatunde, executive director, corporate and sovereign ratings, Agusto & Co, and Chidi Odinkalu of Africa Programme of the Open Society Justice Initiative will discuss the topic of the day.
A commemoration of the partnership formed in 2004, the Aelex Annual Lecture has in the last 10 years thrown up very vital issues significant to the development of Nigeria as a nation and Africa at large. The first of the annual series commenced in 2005 with the theme, “The Regulator in a Deregulated Economy”- (2005).
This was followed by lectures on germane issues such as “Competition Policy as an Engine for Economic Growth”- (2006); “Corporate Governance: Who profits?” (2007); “Freedom of information: Balancing the Public’s right to know against the individual’s right to privacy”- (2008); “How Ghana Kept the Lights On” (2009); “Taxation without Representation”(2010); “Corruption, the Thief in Broad Daylight” (2011); “This House Must Not Fall: Constitutional Reform and the People’s Will” – (2012); and “In God’s Name:  Politics, Religion and Economic Development”(2013).
In 2014, the firm at a dinner in Lagos celebrated its milestone achievements with clients and several other partner organisations. It also hosted an IPFA West Africa discourse, titled, “Urban infrastructure- lessons from the international community for Nigeria and Africa.” – an event, which fielded distinguished panellists in urban infrastructure.
AELEX has since inception, as part of its corporate social responsibility, supported “Child Lifeline” – a charity that helps to keep children off the streets.
In 2015, the discourse was on ‘Politics, Democracy and Ethnicity’ and judging from the 2016 panel of discussants, which includes former governor Peter Obi and others, the 11th lecture is not to be missed!
